Délicatesse, rigueur sont les maîtres mots de ce grand violoniste
Né en 1971 dans l’Illinois (USA), Gil Shaham s’installe en 1973 avec ses parents en Israël. A 7 ans, il commence ses études de violon avec Samuel Bernstein à la Rubin Academy of Music à Jérusalem.
A 9 ans, Gil SHAHAM est invité à travailler avec Chaim Taub, violon solo du Quatuor de Tel-Aviv et de l’Orchestre de Chambre d’Israël et qui sera d’ailleurs son professeur par la suite. Au cours des étés 1980 et 1981, il se rend dans le Colorado (USA) pour suivre les cours de Dorothy Delay et Jens Ellermann. En 1982, il obtient une bourse pour continuer ses études avec Dorothy Delay et Hyo Kang à la Juilliard School de New York.
Gil Shaham fait ses débuts de soliste à l’âge de 10 ans avec le Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra sous la direction d’Alexander Schneider, ce qui fut un triomphe. Un an plus tard, il joue pour la première fois avec l’Israël Philharmonic Orchestra et Zubin Mehta. Il a reçu Avery Fisher Career Grant en 1990 et Avery Fisher Award en 2008. (Jacques Thelen)
