Après avoir étudié le piano, notamment auprès d'Alfred Cortot, et donné plusieurs concerts, c'est sur les conseils de Furtwängler que Peter Maag s'initie à la direction d'orchestre. Le chef suisse nous accompagne toute cette semaine dans En Pistes !

Peter Maag est un chef d'orchestre suisse, né le 10 mai 1919 à Saint-Gall et mort le 16 avril 2001 à Vérone en Italie.

Né d'un père pasteur luthérien et musicien érudit et d'une mère violoniste dans le Quatuor Capet, il est le petit neveu de Fritz Steinbach, éminent chef d’orchestre et grand ami de Brahms, qui avait été le professeur d’Adolf et de Fritz Busch.

Peter Maag étudie le piano, notamment auprès d'Alfred Cortot et commence une carrière comme soliste. Lors d'un concert dans lequel il interprète le Quatrième Concerto de Beethoven sous la direction de Furtwängler, ce dernier lui aurait alors conseillé de se consacrer à la direction, non qu’il se soit montré médiocre pianiste, mais parce que Furtwängler avait remarqué qu’il voulait sans cesse donner les départs à l’orchestre. Peter Maag devient ainsi l’assistant de Furtwängler puis d’Ernest Ansermet.

Il fit une grande carrière de chef d’opéra, avec des interprétations très remarquée des œuvres de Mozart, carrière qu’il interrompit pendant deux années (entre 1962 et 1964) lorsqu’il pensa que le succès lui avait fait perdre le contact avec le divin et avec la musique. Il se retira dans un monastère grec orthodoxe puis auprès de moines bouddhistes.

Peter Maag ne se consacra prioritairement au concert qu’à la fin de sa vie.
