Thomas Bartel se découvre très jeune une passion pour l'image. Dès ses 14 ans, il commence à prendre des photos, essentiellement en noir et blanc et fréquente assidûment les salles de cinéma du Quartier Latin. Après ses études, il travaille pour le festival de films Resistances et continue à pratiquer la photographie, avec une approche documentaire comme en témoignent ses thèmes de prédilection : l'intimité, la vie quotidienne, les visages ... En 2000, il devient photographe professionnel, pour la presse musicale d'abord, puis pour des agences de communication et de production cinéma. Il écrit régulièrement pour la revue pop moderne Magic (chronique, interviews, comptes rendus de concert)et vient ainsi nous parler du nouvel album de Cat Power qu'il a pu interviewer.
