Quand les gens parlent de moi, ils associent aussitôt ma personne à des horreurs, à l'atonalité et à la composition avec douze sons. Généralement les gens oublient qu'avant de développer ces nouvelles techniques, je suis passé par deux ou trois périodes au cours desquelles j'ai forgé les moyens de composition me permettant de voler de mes propres ailes, et d'une manière excluant toute comparaison avec d'autres compositeurs, mes devanciers ou mes contemporains.
On prend rarement conscience qu'une main qui ose abandonner tant de trésors accumulés par ses prédécesseurs doit être parfaitement entraînées aux techniques que les nouvelles méthodes sont appelées à remplacer.
(....) Je suis certain que les œuvres de ma dernière manière susciteraient à tout le moins le respect qu'elles méritent, si le public avait la possibilité d'entendre les œuvres de mes périodes antérieures.
