Le chef d’orchestre Dimitri Mitropoulos, entre autres à la tête du New York Philharmonic de 1949 à 1958, « se considérait comme un « surinstrumentiste », jouant de l’orchestre comme d’autres du violon ou du hautbois » ainsi que l’a écrit M. Le Roux.
