Successeur de Toscanini à la tête du New York Philharmonic, Sir John Barbirolli a débuté comme violoncelliste. Nommé à la tête du Hallé Orchestra à son retour d’Amérique, il est l’invité de prestigieux orchestres, dont le Philharmonique de Vienne.
